A former official was sentenced to life behind the bars by a local court in Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province, on Friday for corruption.

Li Guowei, former director of Ganzhou City's Administration of Highways, was convicted of taking bribes valuing some 1.97 million yuan (approximately 238,210 US dollars) from 1992 to 2004. He was unable to identify the sources of his income, which amounted to some 3.67 million yuan (443,780 US dollars), according to the verdict of the Ganzhou No. 1 People's Court.

Police have confiscated Li's illegal income of some 4 million yuan (), 110,000 US dollars, 50,000 Hong Kong dollars and 300 Euros. Several other items of Li's were also confiscated by press time.

The 49-year-old Li was sentenced to life imprisonment, bereaved of political rights and had his personal property confiscated.
