The presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan scheduled for June will go as planned regardless of whether President Askar Akayev would resign or not, head of the Kyrgyz Constitutional Court was quoted by Interfax as saying on Saturday.
"In any case, the presidential election date of June 26 is legitimate and the elections will be held regardless of whether Akayev tenders his resignation or not," Constitutional Court Chairwoman Cholpon Bayekova told a news briefing in Bishkek. "It would be ideal if Askar Akayev arrives in Bishkek and relinquishes his duties here," Bayekova said.
As Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Roza Otunbayeva warned a day earlierthat Akayev would be in danger if he returns to Kyrgyzstan, Bayekova said it would also be acceptable for a Kyrgyz parliamentary delegation to meet Akayev outside the country and bring his notarized resignation to Bishkek.
"This notarized resignation would be endorsed by parliament," she added.
Earlier, Bayekova was quoted by Itar-Tass as saying that Akayevis ready to sign a written statement on his resignation.
Akayev, who fled to Russia amid opposition protests last week, suggested in a Russian television interview Tuesday that he might be willing to submit a formal resignation if his security is guaranteed by the new Kyrgyz parliament.
