A recent survey finds that most respondents here recognize the importance of the Basic Law and close to half of those interviewed believe the Basic Law is inherently linked to their daily lives.

The survey, which was conducted by the Joint Committee for the Promotion of the Basic Law of Hong Kong in March, found that up to 65 percent of the respondents thought the Basic Law was "quite important" or "very important".

Meanwhile, over 50 percent of the interviewees admitted that they did not know much about the legal document while 56.4 percent of the respondents felt that it is necessary for them to learn more about the document.

When asked about local measures to promote awareness of the Basic Law, significant majorities of the interviewees thought the efforts of the government, the community and schools have all been unsatisfactory, amounting to 56 percent, 62 percent and 41.3 percent respectively.

The Basic Law was adopted on April 4, 1990 by the Seventh National People's Congress of China. It came into effect on July 1,1997.
