US to determine if quotas should be reimposed on China's textile products

The Bush administration said Monday it would bring trade cases against China to determine whether quotas should be reimposed to protect textile and clothingmanufacturers against a surge in Chinese imports.

The Committee for the Implementation of Textile Agreements, an interagency group chaired by the Department of Commerce, said it was initiating so-called safeguard proceedings on imports of certain Chinese origin textile and apparel products.

"This decision is the first step in a process to determine whether the US market for these products is being disrupted and whether China is playing a role in that disruption," said CommerceSecretary Carlos Gutierrez in a statement announcing the action.
