Kyrgyz parliament puts off again Akayev resignation debate
font size

The Kyrgyz parliament on Wednesday postponed for the second time approval of ousted President Askar Akayev's resignation, citing a need to repair equipment for live broadcasts across the Cental Asian country.

The discussion was delayed to Thursday morning, parliament sources told a group of dismayed reporters coming to cover the key event for the legalization of Akayev's step-down.

Parliament Speaker Omurbek Tyekebayev had announced the initial delay Tuesday, noting that a group of legislators needed a rest after their mission to Moscow to acquire the necessary resignation signed by Akayev.

"We have not accepted the president's resignation yet. A quorum will gather tomorrow and I hope we will discuss Akayev's resignation," Tyekebayev said, adding that "Akayev will remain Stan's legitimate president" until parliament's decision is made.

Akayev fled the country on March 24 as opposition supporters stormed the main government building in Bishkek.

On Monday, Akayev signed the resignation documented by a notary in the Kyrgyz Embassy in Moscow when a Kyrgyz parliamentary delegation headed by Tyekebayev were present.

Under the Kyrgyzstan's constitution, a president must announce his resignation to parliament in person.

But Constitutional Court chairwoman Cholpon Bayekova said earlier that Akayev's resignation would also be acceptable if a Kyrgyz parliamentary delegation met him outside the country and brought his notarized resignation to Bishkek.

The consecutive delays added to complications as parliamentarians, many of them from the pro-Akayev bloc, remain at odds over the acceptance of his resignation.
