Most of the inferior meat in China contains too much water or fails freshness standards, according to the inspection report from China's quality control authority released here Friday.
Approximately 89.1 percent of the samples randomly selected from 201 distributors in 13 cities including Fuzhou, Changchun, Jilin, Yanji, Nanjing, Huai'an, Changzhou, Lanzhou, Linxia, Wuhan, Yichang, Xianning and Beijing, passed the inspection, according to the report from the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC).
Of the remaining 10.9 percent, about 10.8 percent contained too much water.
The inspection conducted by the SAIC mainly focused on pork, mutton and beef. A total of eight items were tested, especially the heavy metals such as arsenic, mercury, cadmium, some pesticides and clenbuterol hydrochloride, a chemical used to improve the muscle ratio.
