Taiwan residents protest TSU' s visit to Japan war shrine
font size

Many Taiwan residents have protested against the Taiwan Solidarity Union's visit to a shrine honouring Japan's war dead.

Taiwan Solidarity Union Chairman Su Chin-chiang visited the Yasukuni Shrine last week to pay his respects to Taiwan soldiers who died while serving in the Japanese military during Japan's rule over the province from 1895 to 1945.

The protestors have demanded an apology outside the heavily guarded union headquarters. The protesters showed pictures of Japanese troops burning down villages and showing off beheaded aboriginals.

They have also demanded Taiwan authorities to remove local leaders in support of Su Chin-chiang's visit.

The visit has provoked a storm of protest in the province.
