Sri Lankan soldier abducted by Tigers

A Sri Lankan government soldier has been abducted by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels and the international truce monitors have been informed of the abduction, the state radio reported Sunday.

Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) said that a soldier was abducted in the Eastern Province area of Muttur while returning to his sentry point having visited his area headquarters at around 11 a.m.(0500 GMT) on Saturday.

Brigadier Daya Ratnayake, military spokesman, told the radio that Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) which is monitoring the ongoing cease-fire between the government and the LTTE has been informed of the abduction.

The radio added that S Elilan, a leader of the LTTE rebels, said that the soldier had trespassed onto area of their control.

Military sources said that soldier F G Siriwardena held the rank of Sergeant in the Army and he had in his possession his weapon at the time of abduction.
