China boasts more than 150 mln m2 of commercial street

According to incomplete statistics by China Commercial Walking Street Committee there are more than 3,000 shopping streets in Chinese cities above the county level. Pedestrian shopping streets have topped 200. The total length of shopping streets has exceeded 1,800 kilometers and together they occupy an area of more than 150 million square meters.

China Well-known (Feature) Commercial Street Award & Experience Promotion and Exchange Conference of Wuhu Zhongshan Road Commercial Street, sponsored by China Federation of Urban Commercial Outlets Construction Administration, China Commercial Walking Street Committee and People's Government of Wuhu, was held recently in Wuhu of Anhui province. Representatives of nearly a hundred commercial streets from 37 cities of 21 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government) attended the meeting. The meeting commended China's first group of well-known commercial streets, feature streets and commercial streets with good prospects of value appreciation.

Xun Peilu, chairperson of the China Federation of Urban Commercial Outlets Construction Administration, said the development of China's commercial streets is showing four characteristics, that is, rapid aggregate growth, increasingly prominent status, lack of operation features and worrying economic returns. Dong Li, secretary-general of the China Commercial Walking Street Committee, believes that the risk of developing commercial streets is reflected in the scale of project, construction form, market orientation and investment invitation and marketing etc. It is in dire need of industrial regulation and guidance. Experts point out that commercial streets have become an important "urban window" and "urban business card". It is necessary now to attach importance not only to the construction of commercial streets, but also to their operation and management.
