font size

Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) plans to build 15 new berths at Pasir Panjang Terminal by 2011 to serve its customers' needs, Transport Minister Yeo Cheow Tong announced on Monday.

The development will increase PSA's handling capacity from 20 million to 31 million standard containers, or twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

"The Singapore government has also started planning for the next phase of development at Pasir Panjang, which will eventually add another 16 berths, bringing the total number of berths at Pasir Panjang Terminal to 42," Yeo added.

PSA's four terminals in Singapore handled a record high of 20.6 million TEUs in 2004 and will need an additional capacity of 1 million annually in the next few years.
