SAIC to build Rovers in Shanghai

The Chinese motor giant that abandoned talks to save MG Rover from collapse is planning to build Rover cars in Shanghai.

Now it is preparing to use the expertise to make Rovers in its factories.

The Shanghai automaker will be able to resurrect the Rover badge in the East without having to tie up with MG Rover in Britain and sack thousands from the company's West Midlands workforce.

But before they could make these cars in Shanghai, they would have to get permission from BMW to use the Rover name.

BMW owns the rights to the Rover name and licenses it to MG Rover. The German company has said it would not reject a serious request to use the name.
