Basic Law interpretation favorable to HK: legal sector

Many personnel from the legal circles of Hong Kong said Wednesday that the interpretation of the Basic Law by the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee in relation to the tenure of Hong Kong's new Chief Executive (CE) is favorable to Hong Kong.

They made the remarks after holding discussion with Deputy Secretary-general of the NPC Standing Committee Qiao Xiaoyang in Shenzhen on Tuesday. They said the atmosphere of the discussion was sincere, and the participants' attitude was frank and honest.

Many of them are in favor of law interpretation by the NPC Standing Committee, believing that the interpretation will play an important role in maintaining the stability of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Executive Councilor Andrew Liao said the Basic law interpretation by the NPC Standing Committee is the only way in securing a smooth CE by-election on July 10. NPC Standing Committee has the right to interpret the Basic Law, and it is constitutional.

Alan Leong, a senior Counsel, said he never doubts that the aim of the law interpretation by NPC Standing Committee is in the interest of Hong Kong. He said the discussion is frank and honest, and the participants expect further exchange on this issue.
