China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said in Beijing Wednesday that China will attend the second world conference of parliamentary speakers and actively contribute to it.

Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), made the remark in a meeting with Anders Johnsson, secretary general of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

The second world conference for parliamentary speakers will be held at the headquarters of the United Nations from Sept. 7 to 8 this year by the IPU along with the celebrations of the 60th founding anniversary of the United Nations.

Founded in 1889, IPU now has 140 state members.

"The IPU has provided a key communication platform for parliaments of different countries and has played an important role in international affairs," Wu said.

He said China appreciates IPU's long-term efforts in maintaining world peace and security, promoting democracy in international relations, boosting economic growth of developing countries and improving understanding among parliaments and peoples of different countries.

"China attaches great importance to its cooperation with the IPU and is willing to play a more active role in IPU issues," he said.

Johnsson said the IPU welcomes the NPC to the second world conference for parliamentary speakers and hopes China will play a constructive role to help turn the conference a great success.
