Nepali king stresses democracy, elections
font size

Nepali King Gyanendra has said that in view of improving law and order situation, there should not be any delay in activating the democratic process, therefore he commanded the Election Commission to conduct municipal elections within this Nepali year.

"The (Nepali calendar) year 2062 may turn out to be a meaningful year in the interests of the Nepalese people and in making multi-party democracy sustainable, people-oriented and mature with the active support of all peace loving democrats around the world," the king said in a message given to the nation at the beginning of Nepali New Year on Thursday.

"On this day, while ensuring that each and every political activity upholds democratic norms and values, let us all pledge to safeguard the basic well-being and democratic rights of the people, with the constructive involvement of all patriotic democrats who place the nation above all else," King Gyanendra noted.

A robust and effective multi-party system envisages governance of the country by the people's representatives elected through impartial elections on the basis of adult franchise, he added.
