An Iraqi detainee was murdered at a US-run Iraqi prison in a fight between detainees that also left 12 others injured, the US military said on Friday.
The riot occurred Thursday night at Camp Bucca prison just outside the port of Um Qasr in southern Iraq.
"The guards regained control of the compound and immediately began rendering medical treatment to 12 other detainees who were injured during the fight," the military said in a statement. The corpse of the victim is to be handed over to the Iraqi government after the completion of an autopsy before returned to the family, the statement said.
On April 1, 12 detainees and four US guards were wounded in a riot in which detainees burned tents and hurled rocks at Camp Bucca, the largest US-run prison in Iraq, which houses approximately 6,000 detainees.
Prison guards foiled a jailbreak by finding two tunnels dug under the ground at Camp Bucca last month, while US guards shot dead four inmates during a riot at the same prison in January.
