China does not accept the US decision to launch investigations aiming to restrict Chinese textile imports, said an official with the Ministry of Commerce ( MOC) Friday in Guangzhou.
The US government announced on April 3 that it will launch a restrictive measures investigation on cotton trousers, cotton knit shirts and cotton and man-made fabric underwear imported from China.
During the press conference at which China issued its first white paper on foreign textile trade, Lu Jianhua, director of the MOC foreign trade department, said the investigation is "wrong" since the United States decided to make the investigation based on preliminary figures.
He said the US decision goes against provisions concerning China's accession to the World Trade Organization and the internal procedures of the United States.
China and the other the WTO members agreed to launch investigations in cases where trade and market were disturbed.
He said no evidence showed that the US market was disturbed.
Even if the market was disturbed, the United States cannot say it was directly caused by China's export of textile.
Lu said the United States and China have different ways of collecting statistics. Since customs statistics of first quarter has not been issued yet, China has not carried out consultations with the US.
