font size

A Sri Lankan Army soldier stationed in the northern town of Jaffna had shot and killed an officer and two soldiers, defense officials said.

The incident occurred at 11 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) Saturday at the Chavakachcheri military camp.

Details are not available at the moment.

The soldier was promptly arrested, authorities said. Sri Lankan Army has about 30,000 troops stationed in Jaffna.

Jaffna is the cultural capital of the minority Tamils. The Army took control of the city from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam rebels in December 1995.
