Togo's security forces on Thursday started casting ballots, three days ahead of Sunday's presidential election to make sure the race turns out a success in the West African nation rocked by weeks of political turmoil.
"Voting has begun in accordance with clause 135 of the election law. Things are going on quietly in order and security," Minister of Defense and Veterans Assani Tidjani told the press on Thursday.
He described it as a "normal balloting" by soldiers who will ensure order and property and personnel security on the election day.
About 12,500 soldiers and police are expected to go to the 92 polling stations across the country to cast their votes, which will end on Friday evening.
With the mediation of the Economic Community of West African States, Togo's political parties have agreed to contest in the race for presidency, putting an end to the crisis following the death of President Gnassingbe Eyadema on Feb. 5.
