US urges Lebanon to quickly organize elections
font size

The United States on Friday urged the government of Lebanon to quickly organize elections and cooperate with the investigation of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri's assassination.

"Our view is that the important thing for the government of Lebanon to organize elections and to cooperate fully with the international investigation into the assassination of Rafik Hariri,

" State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said at a briefing.

Ereli declined to comment on reports that Jamal al-Sayyed resigned as head of Lebanon's general security department. The United States has called for parliamentary elections in Lebanon before the end of May.

Meanwhile, the United States has demanded Syria to immediately withdraw its troops and intelligence personnel out of Lebanon after Hariri was killed in an explosion in February.
