Chinese President Hu Jintao and Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor agreed in Jakarta Saturday that they would work for a comprehensive development China-Ghana relationship.

The two presidents met on the sidelines of the Asian-African Summit, which began Friday with the aim of expanding strategic cooperation between the two continents. The summit is the first in 50 years since a similar one was held in Bandung, Indonesia in 1955.

Leaders of China and Ghana both attended the meeting in 1955. Ghana was among the first African countries to have established diplomatic ties with China, and supported China in resuming the seat at the United Nations. Hu told President Kufuor that China will continue to support Ghana in its socio-economic development and offer assistance with its capacity. Kufuor visited China in 2002 as president of Ghana. He told Hu Jintao that Ghana welcomes more Chinese businessmen to invest and hopes to strengthen cooperation with China in railways construction.

The Ghanaian president described the current Asian-African Summit as a milestone in South-South cooperation. It shows that African nations have come to realize the opportunities arising from the fast economic growth in Asia, he said.
