Togo poll ends with deadly clashes
font size

At least three people have been killed and 13 others injured, three by firearms, as voting in presidential elections ended in the Togolese capital Lome.

Security forces in Togo's capital fired tear gas to disperse youths in the opposition stronghold after a tense presidential poll on Sunday.

Weeks of opposition protests demanding a delay and deadly battles between rival supporters armed with machetes have fuelled fears of more violence in the West African country.

There were isolated skirmishes between rival supporters on Sunday but no explosion of violence as feared.
