| Bulgaria, Romania sign EU accession treaty |
|
Romania's Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu (L) and President Traian Basescu (C) are congratulated by Luxembourg's Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker and European Parliament President Josep Borrell as European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso looks on after signing the accession treaty to the European Union in Luxembourg April 25, 2005. The EU signed an accession treaty with Bulgaria and Romania, embarking on its second wave of enlargement into eastern Europe despite lingering misgivings. The two Balkan states will join the EU on January 1, 2007, provided they implement tough reforms to root out corruption, beef up border controls, strengthen judicial and administrative systems and upgrade rules on state aid to industry.
