The US government announced Thursday it would proceed with a plea filed by US manufacturers for curbing imports of seven categories of textile and apparel products from China.
In a statement, the Committee for the Implementation of Textile Agreements, an inter-agency group chaired by the Commerce Department, said it agreed to consider the request "for safeguard action limiting imports of seven categories of textile and apparel products from China."
The Committee's decision will trigger a 30-day comment period.
After that, the US government will have 60 days to make a decision on whether to grant the request to re-impose quotas.
"The Committee will now solicit public comments on the requests,in particular with regard to whether the US market for those products is disrupted, and if so, the role of Chinese-origin products in that disruption," the statement said.
The Chinese products covered by the US manufacturers' petition include various types of shirts, blouses, sweaters, trousers, dressing gowns, bras and synthetic fabric.
