Brazil will officially grant four years of political asylum on Friday to Ecuador's ousted President Lucio Gutierrez, who had applied for political asylum earlier this week.
Under the terms of the asylum, Gutierrez will be able to live within Brazil but needs a permit to leave the country. He also hasto report any change in his address and is not allowed to participate in political activities. The asylum can be extended after it expires.
Gutierrez's application for asylum was submitted to Executive Secretary of the Justice Ministry Luiz Paulo Barreto on Thursday.
The approval of his application will be published Friday in theOfficial Gazette and the asylum will be effective henceforth for Gutierrez, his wife Ximena Bohorquez and their daughter Viviana Estefania.
On Wednesday, Bohorquez was admitted to hospital due to stress caused by Ecuador's political upheaval.
Gutierrez and his family now stay in the Army Hotel in Brasilia.They arrived here Sunday after a stay of several days at the Embassy of Brazil in Quito, capital of Ecuador, where protesters tried to block his flight to Brazil.
Gutierrez was removed from office by Congress on April 20 for "dereliction of duty" amid violent protests in the capital, which left two people dead.
