The Peruvian government sent a protest note to Chile over the latter's sale of arms to Ecuador during the Peruvian-Ecuadorian border conflict in 1995, the local press reported Saturday.
The foreign minister and defense minister jointly lodged the protest note on Friday evening, reports said.
According to the Peruvian military, Chile sold Ecuador an undefined quantity of weapons and ammunition during the conflict and the sale was considered by the Peruvian government as an "
irreparable" damage to Chile's role as the guarantor of peace between the two countries.
"Chile ought to have kept absolute neutrality in view of the Protocol of Rio, which is a border-demarcation and peace treaty," the note said.
Chile is the guarantor of the Peace, Friendship and Borders Protocol of Rio de Janeiro, signed in 1942.
The note also said the weapons sale was not in accordance with the principles, rules and norms of the charters of the United Nations and Organization of American States.
