Former President of Singapore Wee Kim Wee dies

Former President of Singapore Wee Kim Wee passed away at about 5:10 a.m. on Monday at own residence.

Wee died of prostate cancer complications at the age of 89.

Born in 1915, Wee had been Singapore's President for eight years since 1985.

He visited China as the state leader in 1991.

Before his tenure as President, Wee served as High Commissioner to Malaysia for seven years as well as Ambassador to Japan and South Korea.

He also took several posts in the press circle before and after his diplomatic career.

The cremation will be held on Friday while the public may pay their last respects till Thursday to the "People's President", as called by local media.
