HK, Macao, Taiwan people hail Hu's proposals on cross-Straits relations

Ordinary people from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan say the four-point proposals of Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) Central Committee, was "full of affection and openhearted" and created new ideas for the development of relations across the Taiwan Straits.

The proposals on cross-Straits relations, made during his meeting with Kuomintang Chairman Lien Chan on Friday, "sent care of the mainland to every corner, field and stratum on the Taiwan island in a very natural way -- and in deeds," said Zhang Jiu, a Taipei resident.

"I believe most Taiwan people can accept them not only in words, but in action," he said quoted by the China Central Television (CCTV).

Kai-Huang Yang, a professor with the National Dong Hwa University in Taiwan, said Hu's proposals are "very, very feasible" as a concrete direction.

"Exchanges across the Taiwan Straits will increase obviously and the quality of the exchanges will be raised by a big margin," Yang told CCTV.

A Hong Kong resident said Hu's words were full of a kind of "enthusiasm, sincerity and good will."

"Taiwan compatriots in Hong Kong were all discussing Hu's speech and expressed the belief that it is important to boost the development of cross-Straits relations," he said, quoted by CCTV.

A Macao resident said Hu's proposals are based on the interests of the people across the Straits and show the CPC's breadth of vision.
