The Egyptian embassy in Gaza Monday night mediated the release of a Hamas militant imprisoned by the Palestinian security forces in northern Gaza earlier in the day, a Hamas spokesman revealed Tuesday.
Hamas spokesman in Gaza Sami Abu Zuhri told reporters that the member of the Hamas armed wing al Qassam Brigades in Gaza was released by Palestinian security forces Tuesday morning.
Abu Zuhri said that Hamas leaders referred to the Egyptian diplomats in Gaza and urged them to interfere in order to release the Hamas militant.
"The release of the militant came after Egyptian diplomats and a Fatah prominent leader interference to end the crisis," said Abu Zuhri.
The militant was held for a few hours in one of the Palestinian security headquarters before he was released, but the security forces still keep his arms. Palestinian security sources said implementing the new law to restore order would oblige the security forces to detain people carrying arms in the streets. Witnesses in northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Lahya said that three Hamas militants were trying to launch a Qassam homemade rocket at Israel and a Palestinian security forces tried to prevent them.
The militants and the security forces exchanged fire for a while, until more Palestinian security reinforcement arrived at the area and managed to arrest one of the three militants. The other two managed to run away.
