Japanese oppose constitution revision
font size

Eight civilian organizations have held rallies in Tokyo opposing revision of the Japanese constitution.

Participants at the rally called on all Japanese citizens to protect the constitution saying that the revision is not in the interest of the Japanese people but rather could pave the way for war.

A poll conducted by Japan's Asahi Shimbum shows that 51 per cent of 3,000 surveyed oppose revision of the constitution.

The Constitution of Japan was enacted in 1947, and Article Nine provides that "the Japanese people will forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes."

Japan's Constitution Day and the 58th anniversary of the implementation of the current Japanese constitution were on Tuesday.
