French President Jacques Chirac has urged his citizens to vote "yes" on the EU constitution.
Chirac, who was speaking in an interview on France-2 television on Tuesday, said there was not the slightest chance that the EU constitution could be renegotiated if French voters say "no" to the text in a May 29th referendum.
Chirac added that "it is essentially French-inspired" and that it was the "best possible" choice for France, adding that France would be weakened if voters oppose the treaty.
"I don't know if it would be a difficult time for me (if the "no" vote won), but I know for sure that it would be a very difficult moment for France, which would be strongly weakened. Weakened to defend its interests, to defend its values, and responsible for a break down of the European construction that has developed for fifty years. "
Chirac has staked considerable prestige on getting the treaty approved, but at the same time has said he will not step down if the "no" campaign wins.
European lawmakers have been rallying around Chirac's cause in recent weeks.
All 25 EU members must approve the treaty for it to take effect.
