Holocaust memorial draws German media attention
font size

With only a few days away from the opening of the holocaust memorial in central Berlin, German mainstream media on Wednesday cast a lot over the monument.

Main national television ZDF played a documentary film over thememorial, while the German News Agency DPA also made a series report over monument to the six million European Jews murdered by the Nazi regime.

The memorial is located only hundreds meters away south of the Brandenburg Gate and covers 19,000 square meters. It will open on May 10, two days after the 60th anniversary of the end of the World War II.

The vast memorial, designed by US architect Peter Eisenman, consists of 2,711 dark gray concrete pillars, which together produce an impression of an open grave yard.

In 1999, the German parliamentary voted to earmark some 27.6 million euros (35.5 million US dollars) to the project.
