font size

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on Friday extended his congratulation to Tony Blair on his re-election as British prime minister.

"On behalf of the European Commission, I have the pleasure to convey my warmest congratulations on the occasion of your re-election as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom," Barroso said ina written statement.

Barroso, chief of the European Union (EU)'s executive body, said he was looking forward to working together with Blair to address common challenges, "especially during the British Presidency of the EU."

Britain will host the rotating EU presidency during the second half of this year.

"Our close co-operation is indispensable to the success of the European Union," Barroso added.

Britain's ruling Labor Party has secured its win in the general election held Thursday, garnering so far 351 of the 645 seats in the new parliament, more than the 324 seat needed for a victory.

Labor leader Tony Blair thus becomes the first Labor prime minister to win three successive elections.
