WWII: Asia-Pacific battlefield
On August 15, 1945, Japan declared its unconditional surrender. On September 2, Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu, on behalf of Mikado and the Japanese government, signed the instrument of surrender on board the battleship U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japan.

Girl saved after being kidnapped
A girl is saved and taken away by police officers after being kidnapped in suburbs of Shanghai May 8. A man from Central China's Hunan Province held a girl hostage near a supermarket and forced the girl's father to drive his the car to run away. Police officers succeeded in saving the girl by taking actions four hours later after efforts of negotiation failed. (newsphoto)
