Hamas leaders contacted Egyptian diplomats over conflicting reports on the final results of municipal elections held on May 5, sources close to the movement said on Monday.
The sources said that Hamas leaders contacted Egyptian diplomats in Gaza and urged them to help put an end to what they described as "provocative campaign of the Fatah on the results."
Meanwhile, Hamas said in a statement that Hamas leadership asked the Egyptian side to interfere "to put an end to the Fatah movement's practice in order to keep unity among Palestinian factions and people."
"Hamas leaders also held contacts with Palestinian officials and a number of Fatah leaders to bridge the gaps between the two movements and put an end to any practice that would tense the situation," said the statement.
The second stage of local elections was held in 84 towns and villages in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
Firas Yaghi, executive director of the local elections committee, announced that official final results will be announced on Monday.
