Iranian President Mohammad Khatami stressed Monday that international consensus is needed for the structural reform of the United Nations, the official IRNA news agency reported.
"Any revision and reform in the UN structure should be made with regard to views of all members and the international consensus," Khatami was quoted as saying.
Khatami made the remarks at the inaugural ceremony of an international conference on environment, peace and dialogue among civilizations and cultures, jointly sponsored by Iran and the UN Environment Program.
"The base for the UN structural reform and its implementation should be democratic and take most viewpoints into consideration, and it should observe human rights and particularly the rights of the developing and the least developed states," he said.
In that case, human rights will be respected and international relations, based on peace, justice and equality, will be established, the president added.
"Otherwise, the decision will not lead to international stability and security but will cause new problems for the human society," Khatami noted.
The president added dialogue was the only solution to a common understanding of international development.
