font size

Beijing is soon to unveil its security budget for the 2008 Olympic Games, a top official said on Tuesday.

"We have figured out the security budget for the 2008 Olympics, but it is subject to the government's approval," said Qiang Wei, Deputy Secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of CPC.

Qiang made the remarks on the sidelines of the International Permanent Observatory on Security Measures during Major Events (IPO) closed-door meeting held in the Chinese capital.

But Qiang, also head of the Beijing Olympic Security Coordination Group, refused to reveal the budget, saying it will be unveiled "in a very short time."

Athens, which hosted the Olympic Games last year, spent more than 1 billion euros (1.3 billion US dollars) on security.
