The United States on Friday declined to respond to Japan's call for a five-nation talk if the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) will not come back to six-party talks to solve nuclear issues on the Korean peninsular.
"I think we'll have to see... we all continue to believe firmly that the best way to solve this (nuclear) problem is through six-party talks," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said.
"And we're looking for North Korea to come back, and to come back serious, to deal with the issues and to eliminate the nuclear weapons program," Boucher said.
US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia, Chris Hill, who is visiting Seoul, South Korea, will have talks with South Korean government officials over the nuclear issues on the Korean peninsular, Boucher said.
Japan said on Friday the UN Security Council or the five nations involved in the six-party talks should meet to pressure DPRK if the country remained defiant on its nuclear program.
