Guyana vows to adhere to one-China policy

A visiting Guyanan military chief told Chinese military leaders Friday that his country will adhere to the one-China policy.

Edward Collins, Chief of the Defense Staff of Guyana, made the remark when meeting Xu Caihou, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, and Liang Guanglie, chief of General Staff of the People's Liberation Army.

"Guyana will adhere to the one-China policy, as a proof of the deep friendship between the two countries," said Collins.

Guyana, with 0.8 million population, was the first among Caribbean countries to establish diplomatic ties with China in 1972. Since then, the two sides have maintained smooth development of political, economic and cultural cooperation.

Relations between the two armed forces, Xu said, "have developed remarkably" in recent years, with frequent all-level personnel exchanges. Inspired by the good momentum, China is ready to further boost the relationship.

Collins said the two countries have built up a "close relationship" during past 30 years, which could be the solid foundation of developing military ties.

Liang said China is ready to expand the current cooperation to a multi-area one.

At the invitation of Liang, Collins arrived in Beijing Thursday, starting a good-will visit to China.
