Canadian Olympic medalists Alexandre Despatie and Emilie Heymans won gold medals at the FINA diving Grand Prix in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Saturday. Despatie, the silver medalist in the men's 3-meter competition at the Athens Olympics last summer, won the 3-meter event, while Heymans, who took a bronze in synchronized 10-meter platform diving in Athens, won the women's platform final.
Despatie won with a final score of 480.39 despite a stalled third dive. He began a reverse 3 somersault in the tuck position, but abruptly stopped at the end of the board. His restart went well, and he overcame the two-point mandatory deduction from each judge.
Cesar Castro of Brazil was second (457.38) followed by China's Xu Xiang (455.94). Heymans won the platform with a 377.91 score. China's Jia Dongjin was second (352.38) and Mexico's Paola Espinosa was third (350.38).
The Chinese pair of Jia Tong and Chen Ni won gold in the women's platform synchronized event.
