Afghan Defense Ministry Sunday called on US government to initiate an investigation into the reported abuse of Muslim holy book, the Quran, at Guantanamo Bay prison.
"While condemning any blasphemous acts, Afghan Defense Ministry is calling upon the US government, particularly Pentagon,to initiate a thorough probe into the alleged desecration of Holy Quran," Defense Ministry spokesman Zahir Azimi announced at a press conference in Kabul.
He noted that anyone, if found guilty of desecration, should be openly interrogated and punished.
US magazine Newsweek disclosed in a report last week that US servicemen at Naval detention center in Guantanamo Bay had used copies of Quran in toilet to rattle inmates held there for alleged supporting Taliban and al-Qaeda.
The report has sparked a series of violent demonstrations in Afghanistan as well as part of the Muslim world.
Around 27 Afghans including police and demonstrators have been killed and more than 100 others injured during demonstrations since last Tuesday.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Chief Justice Mawlawi Fazal Hadi Shinwari have also called upon US government to prosecute and punish anyone found guilty of desecrating Quran.
