Taiwan fruits arrive in Fujian
Quarantine officials examine mangos from Taiwan at the Mawei port in Fuzhou, East China's Fujian Province May 15, 2005. A batch of 33 tons of fruits inlcuding mango, lemon, banana, etc arrived at the port in the morning that day. This is the first batch of fruit from Taiwan since the Kuomintang (KMT) chairman Lien Chan and the People First Party (PFP) chairman James CY Soong's visit to the Chinese mainland. The fruits will make debut at the 7th cross-straits trade fair that is to open on May 18, 2005.

Kidnapping suspect shot in head
A little girl is taken hostage by a man who wields a kitchen knife, at Yuzhong District of China's southwest municipality of Chongqing, May 14, 2005. The man was injured with a bullet in the head in the wake of a failed attempt by local police to persuade him to give up. The captive girl was rescued after an hour and the abductor, reportedly a Shanxi native, was rushed to the hospital and dead upon arrival. (newsphoto)

Rice makes surprise visit to Iraq
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrives in the northern Kurdish city of Arbil May 15, 2005. Rice arrived in the northern Kurdish city of Arbil on Sunday at the start of her surprise visit to Iraq, the al-Jazeera TV channel reported. Before her stop in Baghdad, Rice would go to Salahudin resort to hold talks with Masoud Barzani, the newly elected Kurdish regional leader. She is expected to discuss the political process and measures to quell an insurgency that has killed more than 400 people since the transitional government was formed late last month.
