Iran on Sunday strongly condemned the reported desecration of Islam's holy book Quran by US guards at the Guantanamo prison, warning of possible "consequences", the official IRNA news agency reported.

"This is an abhorrent action which we are faced with, but we cannot do anything more that expressing our regret and protest," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi was quoted as saying.

"American authorities should have voiced their outrage more expressly and much sooner and punished the individual behind this act," Asefi said, adding "the world must know that when someone insults a religion, it will not go without consequences."

The Newsweek magazine reported on May 9 that US interrogators at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp placed copies of the Holy Quran on toilets to rattle Muslim inmates, and in one case flushed a holy book down the toilet.

The report has touched off worldwide spread condemnation, especially among Muslims.
