The third session of the Summit of Heads of State and Government opened on the theme: ''European Architecture'' in Warsaw May 16, 2005. Represetatives from 46 member states, inlcuding 21 presidents and 18 prime ministers attended the meeting. The function of the council in the 21st cetury is the main topic of the session.

Climbers race to collect buns on a bun tower during the "Cheung Chau" (bun scrambling) festival in Hong Kong, south China, early May 16, 2005. The two-century-old bun-scrambling festival, suspended 27 years ago, was resumed on Monday. Traditionally, the day of festivities ends with guests climbing 20-meter bamboo towers to retrieve "lucky" buns dotted up their length. The event was banned in 1978 after more than 100 people were injured when one of the towers collapsed.

Wetland Park in Hangzhou opens free to the public

It is the first of its kind in China and the only state-level wetland park in a city.
