Toyota Motor Corp. said Monday it will recall about 23,800 units of its Landcruiser Prado and Hilux Surf sport-utility vehicles to fix a defect in their suspensions which caused a traffic accident in 2003.
In a report filed with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Toyota said the suspension parts for the front wheels deteriorate faster than they should due to inadequate assembling work, and this could make it impossible to drive the vehicles.
In September 2003, the defect caused an accident involving minor injuries to two people on a highway in east Japan's Gunma Prefecture. Five other cases of trouble have also been reported in connection with the defect.
The vehicles to be recalled were manufactured in the period from May 2001 to October 2002.
Hino Motors Ltd., a Toyota Motor subsidiary, also said Monday that it will recall about 200 trucks in three models due to a clutch defect. The vehicles concerned were manufactured from June to November 2004.
