Afghan government laments Newsweek over controversial report
font size

Afghan government Tuesday lamented the US magazine, Newsweek, over its last week's controversial report that triggered violence and left 15 dead in the war-weary nation.

"We can say that Newsweek is responsible for recent violent demonstrations, killing several people and damaging public and private properties," Presidential spokesman Jawed Ludin said at a press conference.

In a report on May 9, Newsweek claimed that US servicemen at Guantanamo Bay prison defiled Quran, the Muslim holy book, at bathroom and used it in toilet to rattle suspected Taliban and al- Qaida inmates held there.

The report sparked demonstrations across the Muslim world but the violent ones held in Afghanistan that left 15 dead and over 100 injured.

The magazine retracted its report as incorrect and offered apology on weekend.

"It is unbelievable that an influential magazine like Newsweek publish such inaccurate and sensitive report to hurt the feeling of Muslims and cause violence in Afghanistan," Ludin added.

However, he refused to comment whether Afghan government wants to sue the magazine or ask for compensation.
