Iranian Majlis (Parliament) Speaker Gholam Ali Haddad Adel Tuesday condemned the reported US interrogators' desecration of the Holy Quran at Guantanamo Bay prison, the official IRNA news agency reported.
"Muslims will not tolerate blasphemy against their sanctities, particularly the Holy Book," Adel was quoted as saying.
"Muslims hatred against the US is revealed more than any time before. This shows the identity of the US statesmen and their enmity with Islam," Adel said.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi on Sunday also termed the reported desecration action as abhorrent.
The Newsweek magazine reported on May 9 that US interrogators at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp placed copies of the Holy Quran on toilets to rattle Muslim inmates, and in one case flushed a holy book down the toilet.
The report has touched off worldwide spread condemnation, especially among Muslims.
Under great pressure from the concerned parties, the magazine on Monday announced a withdraw of the report.
