Greek President Karolos Papoulias and visiting Chinese State Councilor Chen Zhili pledged on Thursday to strengthen and deepen bilateral ties in every aspect, especially in the fields of economy and sports.

During his talks with Chen Zhili, the Greek president praised the traditional friendship between Greece and China, adding that both countries enjoy long histories and splendid cultures.

He expressed his appreciation of China's long-standing foreign policy of peaceful co-existence and actively making friendly cooperation with every country in the world.

He stressed that Athens is willing to contribute to the world peace and stability together with Beijing.

The president reiterated Greece's support to the One-China principle and China's every effort for reunification.

It's inspiring and exciting to find that China is playing a more important role in the international affairs while taking a big stride in economic and social development, he added.

He also expressed his best wishes for a successful Beijing 2008 Olympics.

On her part, Chen noted that the relations between the two countries have developed smoothly since the establishment of diplomatic ties 33 years ago, and the recent years have witnessed a constant progress of their cooperation in the fields of politics, trade and cultural exchanges.

She told the Greek president that the Chinese government thinks highly of the friendly cooperation between the two sides.

She promised that China would like to join hands with Greece to promote the bilateral ties to a new high lever on the basis of mutual respect and benefit.

Chen also met with Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis shortly after her arrival late Wednesday.

The two sides agreed that the Olympic Games provide a new momentum and opportunity for the bilateral cooperation and exchange.
