China rejects US currency pressure
font size

China is stressing that economic disputes should not become political, and problems can only be solved via negotiations. This follows harsh criticism from the US Treasury on Tuesday, saying China risks being branded a "currency manipulator' unless it revalues the yuan before October.

In response, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Kong Quan said the China-US trade relationship is based on mutual benefit. He said it's to expected that conflicts will surface at a time when trade is developing rapidly. But neither side should take unilateral action on these conflicts.

Kong Quan said a healthy bilateral economic relationship can only be created on the basis of fair talks. He also reiterated Premier Wen Jiabao's Monday statement that is, currency reform is necessary for the establishment of China's market-oriented economic system, but it is also China's OWN decision. Wen said China will never bow to outside pressure.
