Chinese state councilor meets with Japanese guests
font size

China and Japan should take specific measures to implement the consensus reached by leaders of the two countries, said Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan in Beijing Saturday.

President Hu Jintao initiated five points on developing Sino-Japanese relations during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in Jakarta. The five-point proposal is of practical significance and of far-reaching historic significance, Tang said during a meeting with the secretaries-general of the tworuling parties in Japan: Takebe Tsutomu of the Liberal Democratic Party and Fuyushiba Tetsuzo of the Komei Party.

The key point for the two sides now is to jointly take specific actions to implement the consensus, Tang said.

Both sides should always adhere to the right direction of promoting Sino-Japanese friendly ties, so as to make Sino-Japanese relations better serve the common interests of both countries in long-term development, Tang said.

Both sides should correctly view and properly resolve the issues between China and Japan, and should fully mobilize positive elements to enhance the healthy and stable development of Sino-Japanese relations, he said.

The two sides should firmly grasp and resolutely safeguard the political basis of Sino-Japanese relations, and should use concrete actions to materialize principles and spirits of three political documents signed by China and Japan, namely the Sino-Japanese Joint Statement, the Peace and Friendship Treaty, and the Sino-Japanese Joint Declaration.

Hu's five-point proposal on the development of Sino-Japanese relations include: firstly, the Japanese government should strictly abide by the three political documents between China and Japan, taking specific actions to forge a friendly and cooperative relationship with China facing the 21st century. Second, the Japanese government should regard history as a mirror to reflect its wartime past. Third, the Taiwan issue should be correctly handled.

Fourth, differences between the two nations need to be resolved through dialogues and peaceful negotiations. Fifth, the two countries should further strengthen communication and cooperation in various areas, encouraging friendly contacts and activities so as to increase understanding and broaden mutual benefits, pushing Sino-Japanese relations forward at a healthy and stable pace.
