Poland's Tomasz Adamek captured the vacant World Boxing Council light heavyweight title in Chicagoon Saturday with a 12-round majority decision over Australian Paul Briggs.
Adamek rallied in the closing rounds of a scintillating battle and was awarded the victory by two judges by scores of 115-113 and 117-113. The third judge scored it a draw at 114-114.
Adamek, 28, improved to 29-0 with 20 knock-out wins. Briggs, 29and a former world kick-boxing champion, fell to 23-2, with 17 knock-outs.
The fight was on the undercard of the heavyweight fight between Chicago-based Pole Andrew Golota and American Lamon Brewster.
Brewster destroyed Golota, claiming a technical knockout 53 seconds into the first round.
